Hello all! It's about time I post something!
I was driving home from work the other night and noticed that there seems to be a lot of debris on and around the roads ... mainly around the interstates. Anyhow, my fertile mind went to work and the following is the resulting story idea/excerpt. Maybe one day it as well as Bepergian will see some serious development!!
Shining City
The city of Chine. It's immaculate, the streets are clean, the buildings look perpetually new. The people are well dressed, well fed. It's a perfect city … but like anything seeming perfect, Chine literally has a dark underside. Under the perfect streets, lies the dark catacombs of the scavengers. The undesirable people of Chine. They only come out as dark stretches across the land. They feed on the filth left behind by the day dwellers. The take anything not put away, including children and animals.
As twilight settles each day on Chine, the day dwellers can catch glimpses of the night scavengers. Tales are told, to frighten misbehaving children, of the hideous night creatures and what they do to anyone who remains outside when darkness claims the land.
Adrian, a young day dwelling lad has been hushed by his parents many times for daring to ask questions of the night. For his 12th birthday he was scolded for wanting to stay up and peer out the windows for the night. He was immediately sent to his bed with out birthday cake.
After that Adrian kept his musings to himself. He searched the library for as much information as he could, but found little of any use. He teachers refused to talk about them and some even reprimanded him for asking.
As he reached the age of maturity (seventeen) and it was time for him to head off to college, Adrian and his friends went out for a celebration dinner.
All went well and Adrian bade good evening to his friends. He was not too far from home, but he knew he had to hurry to get in before dark settled in for the night.
One his way, as twilight begins to deepen towards dark, a furtive figure darts across Adrians line of sight. He stops and searches the shadows for the figure. Luminous green eyes stare back at him from a dark corner of an alley. Adrian moves toward the eyes when a strangled cry from behind causes him to turnaround. When he turns back to where the eyes were, he finds they are gone. Looking around he realizes he only has moments before light ends and darkness takes over.
Adrians sprints to the front door of his home. Light from the foyer spills across the porch as he opens the door. He turns for one last look at the dark. Seeing nothing he quickly shuts the door.
Outside the closed door a furtive figure creeps up and places a dark hand on the door. Feeling the burn of light inside, it shudders and creeps back into the shadows. A smudge on the door is all that remains.
Welcome to my blog! So far it's been a place to store my rough/first drafts. I retired from my day job on 18 OCT 2020. I now call myself writer, artist, and photographer. I am in training to be a better human, according to my teachers, Carmen and Santiago. My husband overheard them whispering one night ... "If she keeps the treats coming, we'll give her good marks!" Anyhow, they get loads of treats, and I hope to treat you all with entertaining writing! Enjoy!
